Downloading documents based on Category/Attribute value

Hi,

We have a folder in Content Server that contains many sub folders (approx. 40,000), each folder has a Category with a "File Number" and all these folders have documents in them.

We want to download all the documents only from certain "File Numbers", there are some parts of CWS that look like they might work. I am just wondering if CWS is the route that might work the best or a combination CWS and something else.

We have looked at Object Exporter but there is no way I can see to filter our the "File Numbers".

Any thoughts?

Hi Shannon,

The first thing that comes to mi mind is to create a webreport/livereport that could go through your treeview and prepare an xml file that could then be used as the Object Exporter input file to download the desired documents.

Not with webreports as you have a tag for getting all the childs of a node in your case the folder.

Another solution is to do all with the good old oscript if you know how to program it.

Just remembered that the original question was to use cws. Instead of oscript you can do it also with cws. probably cws or oscript programming is a bit more complicated than webreports but more performant. Let's say that the solution depends on if you need to do this export only once or if it has to be done on a regular base.

If you used web services, you could potentially use Livereport output - via runReport - of folder IDs and feed that into the listNodes function to get at the IDs of the child objects (or listNodesByPage if there’s a huge number of child objects so you could more efficiently cycle through them). If there’s full folder structures beneath the parent then you’d have to do a little more legwork to crawl the results for subfolders and then get children’s child IDs, and so on. But it should still be viable.

Not sure about OE in that regard, though. Someone else may be able to chime in on that.

Object Exporter names files with a technical name for path fidelity if you cannot post process the xml you do not get files like people need like my document.docx OE output is a OI input file for ease of transfer between two livelink systems

Is there a way to run a SQL query to just get the objectID’s of the docs you want? If so, the oeoiextensions module I wrote allows you to run SQL to get the ID’s of the objects you want. Let me know if this is something you want to investigate.

Have you considered using the Make Disk Image functionality included in Collections?

You could use standard search to identify all the items you want, collect all search results, the use the Make Disk Image feature to export the whole package for external consumption.

I don't remember but when we suggested this method to a external program they again were not happy with livelink handling the technical aspects ,too huge a folder depth optimized ,if you get what I mean . Also will the file have the right mine type and extension I do not remember.In the end we ended up writing a manifest csv of how things are in LL and gave the files out. The index.htm has file links in the collection if they can live with it.

@Kyle, since we are looking such a large number of documnets that would not work. We would have to do that 20,000 times manually.

The end product need to imported into another appplication.

I think that if we are able to build a LiveReport/WebReport to collect the information needed, we can then use CWS to extract all the documents. That's kind of what I have peiced out of this thread (which has been very helpful).
