Hiding Empty folders from grid in both classic and smart UI

Hi,

I would like to hide all the folders on the grid view which has "0 items" in the "Size" column.

Since our customer is using both the smart and classic view I would like to know what solution can affect both UI's.

Is there any customization option to handle this?

Should I create an override module to handle this in Oscript level?

you could change the code in the WebLingos - see https://www.greggriffiths.org/livelink/customisations/ for an example - although as you want it to work for all interfaces you may be better off doing it in OScript either in the Subtype's WebNode's BROWSE fucntionality or using a callback.

The "common denominator" of Classic and Smart UI (which needs REST API) is in OScript, where container browsing is implemented: LLNode.NodeListContents, LLNode.NodeListContentsByPage and LLNode.NodeListContentsByPageAndFacets. I doubt, that there is public interface to customize them, but others may correct me.

Other possibilities how to hide the empty folders would be using faceted browsing and virtual folders, or live reports, maybe search results with advanced queries.

Also, just because a folder reports "0 Items" does not mean it is empty. The child count gets out of whack enough that it is one of the DBVerify reports to be run to properly maintain your system...so just be aware of that.

Hans, just an example. Yaron's use can may be different. There can be containers copied from a template, like connected workspaces, which will contain empty folders for future documents from the beginning. But the application would not present them to the user as the interface for uploading documents. The application can be more efficient by offering an "upload button" at the workspace level. The target folder will be chosen depending on the document type, template, or other attributes. At least two OT products, which I contributed to, have such efficient UIs designed.

Yaron, I would not recommend you implementing the final solution on the level, which I wrote about. Yes, you would cover all UI clients, but this also may become the problem. If you wanted to see all folders for administration or other purposes, you would have to make the code conditional. It will become more complicated. And the solution on the API level is not inexpensive either.

I would go back to you initial requirement - "in both Classic UI and Smart UI". I would suggest creating pages or widgets, which would allow the user work efficiently. Instead of just hiding empty folders, I would look at the whole scenario. Why do you see them so often, that you have to customize the product, so that they would not be visible? Is there not something wrong in the implementation of the customer's use case?

There is a Node Callback that could be used here rather than overriding the methods Freda identified.

I mentioned methods involved, which you would have to hook in. Of course you woldn't override the methods themselves :-)

As Kyle replied, this kind of customization woudl mean writing a Filter Node callback, but if you didn't want it to apply everywhere, you would need some configuration. And also being careful, because this is the central place for browsing functionality. That's why I questioned the necessity of one global solution and suggested creating a scenario-specific UI.

I just got informed that the requirment is focused on search results only.

Also I can identify if the current user is admin or not, and apply this oscript change,

only for admins.

Since we are only interested in search results for non admin users,

is there any other solution other than customized module?

Are you familiar with search templates and slices?

You might be able to create a search slice that users could explicitly use that excludes all items with an "size 0", using the OTObjectSize region.

In simplistic terms, if you can create a search query to find everything that is an empty folder, then you create a search slice to use the inverse of that query.

For example, the complex search query OTSubType:0 and !OTObjectSize:0 would find all folders (SubType 0) where they have a a 0 Childcount (as inferred by OTObjectSize being = 0). I'm not sure if folders with hidden items would be filtered by this search, as a hidden item still counts toward size count.

In fact, I almost suspect that you're answer might simply be creating a search slice that excludes all objects with a 0 ObjectSize.....try running a complex search of OTObjectSize:0 AND !OTSubType:0. Does this return any results other than system objects (e.g. volumes, RM Classifications etc). If not, you could likely just use the slice to filter out ALL content with OTObjectSize = 0.

This way, you could have two search slices users could use - one per "defaults" (I say default, assuming the Enterprise slice is used and hasn't been altered) and another called "Exclude empty items", which would filter based on the above logic.
