Auto-fill category attribute values with a button/inline command

I am trying to auto-fill data in a custom category using SmartUI. Multiple categories show up as a single scroll page in the Categories section. My requirement is to be able to add a button/action to fetch attribute values returned from a REST API and store it for the node/document. Need suggestions for this, can this be an inline command button on the menu that pops a form to enter data or can we add a button to where the categories show up? Any other approach? Please find the screenshots attached for eg

Both approaches are possible. Both of them have the biggest part the same - a command which loads and shows the form and saves the data. Extending the Metadata widget would fit better, but integration possibilities are not satisfactory there. You cannot place a custom button on the category form to populate it with data. You could add a menu item to the "+" menu on the right side, where items like "Add Category" are located, but it doesn't fit well for filling an existing category. If you wanted to add a new one, you wouldn't be able to show it as a new tab, without reloading the whole dialog.

I would recommend adding a button on the toolbar opening your own dialog. This scenario is straightforward to develop. Integration to the Metadata widget could be done later, if desired, and if you get time for it.

The button would execute a command, which opens a modal dialog, loads data from the server, shows the form and offers buttons to save the data or cancel the action. The SDK example "samples/commands/rename" is the closest examp[le to show, how to open a dialog. There is no example showing how to work with forms.

1. Create a command for the scenario. See the example "samples/commands/rename/rename.command.js".
2. Add a button with the command signature. See the example "samples/commands/rename/rename.nodestable.toolitems.js".
3. Write a model to supply the form data and schema. Inherit from FormModel (csui/models/form).
4. If the form content is configurable on the server, implement a REST resource in OScript similar to api/v1/forms/nodes/categories/update?id={node_id}&category_id={category_id}, which will return both data and schema for the form. Make the model in JavaScript a node-fetchable resource - use the NodeResource mixin (csui/models/mixins/node.resource/node.resource.mixin).
5. If the form content is fixed and only the data change, you may hard-code the form schema on the client side and fetch only the data using a simpler REST resource.
6. Place FormView (csui/controls/form/form.view) to the dialog with the custom form model and fetch the data.
7. Implement data saving using $.ajax.
