CWS Search for folder nodes by node name

Hi all,

we currently let the user browse the folder structure of the workspaces in Content Server. However to improve usability, especially for lager environments we want to add folder searching capabilities to our application connecting to Content Server via CWS.

How can you seach for a folder via the CWS API?

Hi Daniel,

 

This is a pretty broad topic.  What version of CS are you on?  Preferred APIs for access to search for newer development efforts are via the XML API (10.0+) or REST API (16.2+).

 

That said if you’re sticking with CWS then query construction remains largely the same between all three, and even the Advanced Search page in the web UI.  To find a folder the easiest way is probably to include the subtype in the where clause.  In the web UI using complex query that would look something like:

 

LQL long form:

[qlregion OTSubType] = 0 AND [qlregion OTName] = “My Folder Name”

 

LQL shorthand:

(OTSubType:0) AND (OTName:"My Folder Name")

 

XML API:

http://myserver.com/otcs/cs.exe?func=search&lookfor1=complexquery&where1=(OTSubType:0)&lookfor2=complexquery&where2=(OTName:”My%20Folder%20Name”)&outputformat=xml

 

CWS: See sample pinned at the top of the forum.

 

REST: I’m still working on a functional sample, but is mostly the same as the XML API.

 

The query language – Livelink Query Language – you can see doesn’t change a whole lot, it’s just a matter of where you plug in the various operators.  The User Help files within CS itself has all the detailed syntax info in the subsections under Retrieving Information > Searching Content Server.

 

As for controlling what you get back out of these that is a whole other ball of wax and entirely dependent on which API you decide to go with.  But this should hopefully get you pointed in some kind of useful direction.
