Adding new category aatribute to mass objects using webreport

Hello,

I just added one more attribute to one category but this attribute is not populated automatically to all the objects which is having the same category so i need to upgrade them individually.

my question is what is the proper way to upgrade all those -millions- objects and add the new attributes to them?

i heard that WR can do this, appreciate if you have an example or advais.

Hello Badryah,

just use the function button at the category definition > upgrade items. Please leave the popup open until upgrade is finished.

For skipped items skipped during category upgrade (e.g. might happen with required attributes) you would need a report indeed.

I personally feel that 1 million items if done by OOB OT code will take some time(there are some improvement tips Ot has published). I also think that if the new attribute you introduced is mandatory and you do *not* supply a value like hardcoding a value the upgrade will attempt it but when it reaches objects like documents it will skip them. Livelink aka Content Server has had these pitfalls of processing large chunks so partner products are plenty(BluBaker, FastMan, KnowledgeWorks) but if you want to do chunking yourself using WR there are many techniques. BTW OT themselves are doing a lot more accommodating large operations.DA's processing huge backlogs are common maybe they will add cat upgrades to that as well

What I usually do is to find the outdated or obsolete nodes by that I mean your Category(1666088 ) was sitting at Version 15. You went and added a new attribute and assume it is version 15 wherever you go and you have the old dataid the "upgradeable" icon will show.OT is running code that compares if the version on the current node is below the template. For e.g when you click the upgrade items as another poster said this is what OT is running

so if we can devise a query to chunk that between the lower bound and upper bound you to have your way

I added the highlighted so you can know the Range of DataIDs .(in case you are wondering what the ExAtt1 things are it is checking to exclude any Compound Documents that may have a release or revision.)

Now that you have a range you can create different jobs with creating ranges

select distinct(ID) from LLAttrData,DTree where DefID=1666088
and DefVerN<15 and DataID=ID and VerNum=VersionNum and (ExAtt1!='R' or ExAtt1 is null) order by ID;

Example 1:select distinct(ID) from LLAttrData,DTree where DefID=1666088

and DefVerN<15 and DataID=ID and VerNum=VersionNum and (ExAtt1!='R' or ExAtt1 is null) and ID between 4656579 and 4666579 order by ID; //this should give us 10000 items theoretically for a single WR

so if you create 5 WR programs and have that 5 execute parallel on non competing (we call them non-colliding) and if your throughput was 5000 per hr you may end up getting 25000 per hour(more often than not this increased throughput will slow down other things so have a talk with your infrastructure team to gauge if you will bring down your system by doing this

BTW if you look at my above link I have shown you a more efficient way simply put you bring yourself on the remainder theorem because even though you specify 10000 perhaps the distribution is not in that way.

Another variation is you can dump all the DataIds you want into flat files containing 10000 nodes each and make different WR's work on different input files. If you use a program like a toad to run your query I think it can export in chunks of files..If not search in the web for splitters of excel.

the code in row section of your WR maybe something like

[LL_REPTAG=ID CATACTION:UPGRADE:<category you want upgraded> /]

LL_REPTAG=ID CATACTION:SETVALUE:"category you want upgraded ":"<AttributeName You added>":"<default value>" /]
