looking for documentation/best practices on creating a api to extend rest services

we're needing to create a single call that gets the current version of a document for a r_object_id that may no longer be current and open the document for viewing. Needing to combine the call to get the current version with the content display into 1 call for the calling applications to use. looking for white papers/documentation/best practices on creating a api to extend rest services.
