Download a folder with multiple sub-folders and documents

We are trying to build a module to download all the content of a given folder onto the file system. We use FSA for importing folders from other file systems into livelink and would like to do the reverse process now for few users. Has anyone done this?

Is webservices a better option than the OScript module?

Hi Kapil,

Do not look at it as which is the better way is what I would say.To get livelink to do something it needs to come in as oscript.I would do it according to the skills in your org.If oscript was prevalent then theprogrammers could make use of all the utilities that are available in code the same goes for webservices as well.BTW have you seen the free program that OT bundles for this it is called a collection,the only downside is it will basically try to fit in to the windows or unix file structure so it may not look like the same hierarchy in livelink.We recently did a oscript job to do this because the customers did not like the collection I gave them.Same thing with ObjectExporter you will get all files but it is to be consumed by OI so nobody will like them.Smaller file structures can be dragged/dropped by LL explorer or Connect (I don't know that for a fact)

We use FSA to get the files into livelink. Can it be used to export the whole folder out of livelink on to another filesystem?

vFile is our internal name for livelink, I meant to say livelink...

It is a standard command on livelink but the admin can hide collections button.

What one does is basically you will go to a folder full of items and then type a * (wildcard search) and say search

Now when the results come you say “Add To a Collection”

As mots livelink things it will ask you for a name and place and will say I will alert you when finished.

The id’s of the collected items are stored in COLLECTIONs table so it is very easy for you to write something based

On the row in the collections table as well using simple table joins and download actions using lapi, websvcs or oscript.

Finally after the collections is burnt the livelink sys admin can actually “BURN” the collection which means that he has created a place usually some shred directory in the admin server.

Livelink does not impose a length in path above 256 characters, but while burning structures longer than 256 OT uses a algorithm that truncates the file path so the representation would look out of whack that is why we had to write our own downloader.

If you are not a sys admin but can stand up a simple VM collections will be a great tool for OOB downloading

I see KB has allowed collections try searching your PWS and add it to a collection

Although the KB admin may not like you asking for making a dump of it J

I would echo what Appu said about leveraging your in-house resources (i.e. if you're a big Oscript shop, use Oscript, if you're a big C# use C# and web services, and so on....). One small thing I would add to that. There is a perception that customizations in Oscript will void the warranty. This is not strictly speaking true, but enough CEO's have this perception that you may not be able to write this in Oscript. Is this export going to be a one-time thing or a persistent feature? If it's the former, it's easier to sell an Oscript module as you can tell the executives that the module would be uninstalled once you're done. If it's the latter, you may want to consider doing this as a Web Services app that is run outside of Livelink. Unfortunately, perception is 9/10 of the law

I've heard of FSA but haven't encountered it much and the last time was over 5 years ago.
