How to retrieve category definition using REST

Hi,

How can I get the category definition using REST API which would contain the attribute ids/names. I can then use that to apply categories/attributes to an object in OTCS.

I could see REST API calls to apply and update attributes and I can use them using the keys 'ATTR_2' and 'ATTR_3' but how do i find the keys based on the category id and attribute name.

One option I saw was using the Alpaca Forms call but I am not sure if that is a good alternative.

Now if you really wanted to do this

-You know CatRegionMap has the Attributes info in them (?func=attributes.dump comes from catregionmap)

-REST allows WR

-What is to prevent you from calling a suitably crafted WR?

Dont act on my suggestion but wait till the senior guys can look at it

How are you planning on applying categories/attributes to objects without the use of forms?

Forms are designed for this purpose.

Hi Rakesh,

I don’t understand why you need that flexibility of dynamically mapping names on IDs. Somewhere you are still hardcoding something.

With the transport warehouse you can transport the categories from one system to another ensuring that the attributes have the same ID on all systems.

One way of getting the mapping of attribute names on their IDs is by the URL func=attributes.dump

This function doesn’t support multiple categories with the same name and has therefore its limitations.

Hard coding database generated IDs in your code is asking for problems. A local development environment will certainly have different IDs to the eventual target system; especially if the same code is to be deployed at multiple sites. Hard coding IDs also makes the code difficult to read.

This problem isn't unique to the REST api. OScript developers also face this problem.

A few years ago I addressed this with a module to map IDs (i.e., DataIDs and AttrIDs) to string constants. This is setup in the UI, is similar to nicknames, but can only be changed by an Admin. This provides a programmatic means of referencing a node or attribute without having to know an ID. I also wrapped many internal operations (e.g., AttrData & LLNode) to work with these values, and leveraged it in my own REST implementation. It's been effective, and I'd recommend a similar approach to anyone who regularly programs with categories and attributes.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Below is the issue I am facing.

I am working on a Rest Utility that creates objects( documents, folders etc) and applies categories to the objects. The utility reads a csv/excel file which contains information to create these objects ( name, subtype, location (or) parentid etc ) and all metadata info( category names with attribute names ).

The csv file contains Category and Attribute name : like a sample column could be $Categories Volume:Area:Country - The category is 'Area' and attribute is 'Country'. The category exists in Categories Volume.

Now using Rest API SubNodes call I can get the DataID of 'Area' Category. But to set the a value for the 'Country' attribute I need to know the attribute ID. My question is how can i find the attribute ID by attribute name given I have the Category ID.

Appu : I am writing a Generic app that all clients can use. So, I do not want to create a WebReport to get the Attribute Ids. Attributes.Dump works great for what I am doing. I am trying to see how I can get the info using REST OTCSToken. It looks like it works only for browser based authentication.

Kyle : My query regarding Forms is - Can I use it to retreive the attribute ids. My utility doesnt have an presentation layer for the user to enter values. I was thinking I could make a form call against Enterprise ID ( 2000 ) and it is giving me information related to the category. I could do it against all categoies in category volume and store the category definition in the internal application cache and I can reuse it whenever needed to apply category/attributes.

Is that a right approach (or) Is there an easy way to doing it.
