New doc gets new sequence number instead of inheriting the sequence number of its folder

In Content Server, I have defined a business workspace type, for which a category has been defined, which in turn holds an attribute that automatically genereates a 'Dossier Number' of the format 'D0000000N'.

In the workspace type also subfolders have been defined, which inherit this 'Dosser Number'.

When a new 'Business Workspace' is created based on the type I defined, everything works fine: the 'Dossier Number' is generated and stored on the 'Business Workspace'. And the underlying folders all inherit this newly generated 'Dossier Number'.

The issue now is the following: as soon as I place a new document in one of these subfolders of the new 'Business Workspace', a new 'Dossier Number' is generated for this document, rather then the document inheriting the already generated 'Dossier Number'.

I have been reading the documentation and this forum, but am unable to find a solution for this. Does anyone have experience with this?

    Hi Rob,

    Why do you need the Dossier Number at the folder or document level?

    My experience is that attributes of that type should only be defined on a workspace and not be inherited to sub-items.

    Hi Hans,

    I want to search for documents that belong to a Dossier Number. By registering a Dossier Number on the document level, finding these documents, would be really easy.

    Hi Rob,

    In that case you better make the following configuration on the workspace type:


    On the Advanced tab enable the indexing of category attributes for this business workspace on child items.

    This way you can make use of all the workspace attributes to search for documents.

    Hi Hans, thank you for your help. I have done the update as you described (see first screenshot).

    When I now create a new Business Workspace, this Business Workspace gets a unique DossierNummer 'D00000046' (see screenshot below).

    However, when I now place a new document in a folder inside this Business Workspace, the document still gets a new DossierNummer (D00000047) instead of inheriting the DossierNummer of the Business Workspace in which the document is placed (see screenshot below).

    My expectation is that The 'DossierNummer' of the document is inherited from the Business Workspace and therefore set to 'D00000046'.

    Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

    Hi Rob,


    You need to disable the inheritance of the Dossier - BGH category on the template and maybe also remove it from the folders in the template. With the icon left to the add-category icon in classic view you can edit the inheritance.

    That category should only exist on the workspace and not on the items.
